The National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest professional employee organization, is committed to advancing the cause of public education. NEA's 3 million members work at every level of education—from pre-school to university graduate programs. NEA has affiliate organizations in every state and in more than 14,000 communities across the United States. On July 6, 2019, the NEA voted to support Reparations for descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States. The resolution was submitted by 50 delegates and shepherded by Erika Strauss Chavarria, Maryland.
Resolution
legislation to study and develop reparations and full repair proposals for descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States to address the past and residual effects of slavery and enslavement in America.
Rationale
Descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States have a right to reparations for the crimes and gross injustices committed against them by the United States.
